The Turbulent Flow Precipitator (TFP) Air Cleaner

The Lifebreath TFP uses a unique principle to remove close to 100% of coarser particles such as pollen, fungus spores, dust, animal dander and dirt, and remove close to 90% of tobacco smoke and wood smoke particles and some bacteria. The TFP even removes a large proportion of particles as small as one tenth of a micron - only visible in an electron microscope.

How - The Dullien Principle

Dr. Francis Dullien of the University of Waterloo has made many discoveries concerning the behaviour of airborne particles. In one experiment, he observed that when particle-laden air is forced through a narrow airway, the particles are repeatedly flung against the internal walls by the turbulence of the airflow. If the walls are smooth, the particles bounce off and re-enter the air stream.

In the Lifebreath Air Cleaner, the walls of the internal airway through which dirty air passes are made of a pleated fabric, which traps particles, as they are flung out of the airstream. The result is a high rate of removal of even the smallest particles, with no obstruction to the flow of air. This gives the TFP a high clean air delivery rate (CADR) over time, with little loss of efficiency over the operational life of the replacement filters.

The TFP uses six 20 x 20 x 1 inch pleated filters, such as the 3M Filtrete furnace filter. These pleated filters (or collectors) have a large capacity to hold dust, and only require replacement every few years. Enmedex recommends replacing two of the six filters every year for an average residential environment. These filters are made by a number of manufacturers and can be purchased at many building supply stores.

A Caveat about Filter Performance

When choosing an air cleaner for your home, you may be puzzled by the high performance figures claimed by some very simple devices. On closer examination, you could find that the manufacturer is not measuring the number of particles removed from the air, but the weight. For example, a simple furnace filter may well remove many of the particles larger than 5 microns in size. This could be expressed as 80% removal rate -- by weight. But, as the charts show, particles larger than 5 microns account for only 0.18% of the total number of particles in the air. That 80% figure sounds impressive, but look at the numbers and you will see that it still leaves 99.2% of the particles still circulating. Considering that respirable particles are smaller than 5 microns, this means a standard furnace may help keep the HVAC system cleaner, but is of very little use for indoor air quality.
